The first AWD vs RWD backside shootout that Cleetus McFarland held at Bradenton Motorsports Park was full of controversy. The RWD racers felt they were at a disadvantage because of the rules, but they weren’t ready to give up the fight. Now, for this second event, the RWD racers are attacking the gray areas of the rulebook, adding some extra rubber.
Joey Hiykel, pilot of the Beater Bomb Mustang, was tasked by Cleetus to put together a crew of killer RWD backside racers to take on some AWD monsters. The first race saw the RWD racers get chewed up pretty good, and many pointed to the no water burnout rule as a big factor. For the second race, that rule was changed, but the RWD racers wanted to dig deep into their bag of tricks.
The RWD racers are limited to a 28×10.5 tire, but the rules don’t say how many. So, Charles Corriher, being the racer he is, got to work in the shop and created some adaptors so he could run a total of four 28×10.5 tires on the back of his Mustang. His “Dually Mustang” idea may seem ridiculous, but innovation often bucks the trend of convention. The results will tell the tale if this wild new setup was worth the effort.
Make sure to check out this video from Corriher’s YouTube channel, which shows him making the Dually Mustang conversion and going out for some test laps.
