It’s always fun to think back to the 1960s, the Glory Days of drag racing. Whether you lived them or have been entertained by the stories, the glory days have a place for all of us. The drivers became legends, the cars become icons and the racing stories aged into folk lore.

An icon is what we found when perusing Ebay: a rare 1957 Chevy 210 Hardtop known as the “In-Bomber.” It was purchased by the PMP Racing Team around 1965 in Nebraska and converted into a rubber-burning class winner.

The In Bomber was campaigned from 1966 through 1970 in the Junior Stock class of the NHRA. It competed at events in California, Texas, Indiana and many more in between. There are many stories that add to its iconic status, such as winning the 1968 NHRA Nationals in Indianapolis.  In ’68 Fred Anderson piloted the In-Bomber round-by-round to the semi-finals. He staged against a stout ’56 Chevy delivery known as the Tokyo Rose. Just over 12 seconds later, Anderson and his ’57 were moving into the finals. Anderson’s story book ending was abruptly halted by Bill Jenkins and Larry Lombardo in the finals. Their “Buckshot” Corvette bounced to the finish line in front of the charging In-Bomber.

At the end of the 1970 season, the In-Bomber was given a rest next to a small tree in Nebraska. The small tree grew into a bigger tree during the 30 years the Chevy was parked next to it. It then took an additional 3 years of impressive wrench turning to make the In-Bomber was whole again. It was not only updated, but was restored back to its originalrace condition.

The ’62 Chevy 283ci engine was stroked and bored to 331ci. The Crower solid flat tappet cam provides the old school lumpy sound while the power is enhanced by Eagle H-Beam rods, JE 12.5:1 pistons and Mondello heads. The 400-plus horsepower is fueled by two Edelbrock 550 CFM carburetors on top of an Offenhauser intake. Holding true to the era, it includes a Borg Warner Super T-10 four speed to shift that power through a 4.56:1 ring and pinion. The car that provides a look back in time is equipped with seven-inch Mickey Thompson cheater rear slicks. To complete the drag racing history lesson that is the In-Bomber, look no further than the dash board, signed by former Junior Stock legends George Cureton, Bick Wheatley, Larry Lombardo, Mike Cook and Bill Jenkins. Now the question is: will it really fetch the $365,000 asking price?
