We’ve all seen our fair share of Drag Pak Dodge Challengers in the six years since their release in 2009, competing in the Stock and Super Stock categories, but we’ve seen far fewer — almost none, actually — that have been given the full-on race treatment inside and out. By that, we mean dropping a complete tube chassis under a body and going hog-wild with it. And so that’s what makes this particular eBay find so intriguing. Because, well, this thing is bitchin’.
Because a fiberglass or carbon fiber replica body would be an expensive and time-consuming one-off chore, this project began, naturally, as a 2014 year model body-in-white from Chrysler. Wizard Race Cars in Holden, Louisiana was tasked with constructing the 25.1 chromoly tube chassis, then gutting what they didn’t need from the steel production body and draping it over the skeleton. Only a carbon fiber hood was added, with the rest of the car remaining as steel, so while this work of art may come in a little heavy on the scales, we believe the looks fully offset that fact.
The show-winning looks — it actually won its category at the World of Wheels show in New Orleans — was completed with a purple candy powdercoat of the chassis, and a “Plum Crazy” color applied to the exterior, with carbon fiber racing stripes.
Front struts, rear axles, and shocks were all sourced from Strange Engineering, while Spaghetti Menders products were utilized for wiring the car. A built-up 727 transmission, shifted by a Performance Products shifter, delivers the power out back.
Perhaps most intriguingly, however, is the powerplant itself. Famed NASCAR engine builder Ernie Elliott, the brother of 1988 Cup champion Bill Elliott, assembled a 358 cubic inch small block Dodge mill for the car, centered around the R5P7 platform that was used for years in NASCAR racing.
More than $78,000 was invested in the build, and the quality sure illustrates that. And best of all? It’s never been run, meaning this is like buying a new car fresh off the lot.
