The downright sinister looking rat-rods of the 20’s, 30’s and beyond are real eye catchers. While they bring out some of the wildest and most unique engine combinations and styling cues, I think it’s safe to say we don’t see very many sporting 800+ cubic inch monster motors and a 25.2 chassis. In a world where it seems like everything has been done once, I think it’s safe to say this hasn’t been done.
After lurking through the Yellow Bullet message board for a while, we found what’s likely to become one of the wildest rat-rod customs out there.
If you can peer beyond that insanely gorgeous 820″ Jon Kaase HEMI backed by the venerable Powerglide transmission setup, you might fall in love with the wheel choice, notice how seemingly well the meaty slicks out back and skinnies up front fit the look, or alternatively, you might be saying, “The paint’s just like that for mockup right?” Well, you’d be wrong, as Steve says this 80+ year old paint has done good enough so far, so it’s staying on this old Ford. We couldn’t agree more Steve.
Up front is an aluminum Superbell axle with a Chevy Vega style steering box. It’s a traditional setup as far as the hot rod look goes, though something that hasn’t been seen much in a setup like this. Steve agrees that a rack would have been a better option handling-wise, but didn’t want to lose the look he was shooting for.
It might not look like your typical 6-second door car but that’s exactly what Steve and all the guys at Southeast Hot Rods are shooting for. The rat rod craze is growing bigger as with any style that’s been around and stood the test of time, but could this be one “rat rod” that everyone will appreciate as it screams down the 1320?
