Yes, that’s right – one of the most well-known races in all the land is fast approaching. Orlando Speedworld Dragway is back in the headlines as their World Street Nationals are scheduled to take place over the weekend of November 7-10, 2013 in sunny Orlando, Florida. Over the years, the World Street Nationals has earned a rightful place as of the largest and most prestigious street-legal races held anywhere, and the new owners of the track, Ozzy and Maria Moya, have been hard at work preparing their facility to bring back this one-of-a-kind event.
We here at Dragzine will be on-hand to cover the event as we have in years past; we’ll also be providing more information as the race gets closer to reality, including who and what you can expect to see at this drag racing extravaganza in Florida’s entertainment capital.
Racers from all over the country will be making the trek to the track, which was updated earlier this year with numerous changes including a freshly-ground track surface and renovated bathrooms in conjunction with other facility improvements.
The World Street Nationals race will have a number of classes designed to cater to the series racer, including the fan favorite Super Pro Street class to go along with Extreme Street, Heavy Street, Street Outlaw, and even 8.50 and 10.00 index classes.
Super Pro Street pays a whopping $10,000 to the winner and $2,00 to the runner-up, and has a variety of weight breaks for different combinations. You’ll be able to see everything from single-turbo four and six-cylinder Sport Compact to the traditional twin-turbo, Roots-blown, and nitrous-injected machines that have populated the WSN race in years past in the 32-car field.
The old-school Heavy Street class requires a factory-built car that carries a VIN number and other chassis specifications that are designed to keep the composite-bodied machines out. $5,000 goes to the winner in the 32-car field, and this class also offers the opportunity to see small- and-big-block nitrous, turbo, and blown machines.
Extreme Street also pays $5,000 to the winner and will encompass many of the Outlaw Drag Radial-type cars that you’ve seen in the past, with four and six-cylinder Sport Compact machines also having a home here.
Street Outlaw caters to street-appearing vehicles with a variety of engine combinations, but the one stipulation is that stock-style suspension is required, and the racer has a choice of either 275/60/15 drag radial or 28×10.5 slick-type tires.
Weight breaks and detailed rules for all of the various classes and combinations can be found on the OSW website.
