Ending some recent speculation in regards to his future plans, Frankie “Mad Man” Taylor announced on Wednesday morning that he has decided to switch back to his tried-and-true supercharged engine combination beginning with this weekends ADRL Northeast Drags II at the Maple Grove Raceway in Reading, Pa.
During the off season, Taylor revealed his intentions to try a turbocharged combination in an effort to reduce operating costs. He and the rest of his team spent much of the winter preparing and testing the combination that featured a pair of Bullseye Power turbochargers. Said Taylor in December, “It’s exciting and hopefully it will be something different. I’m going to try my approach and see if I can make it work. If it does work, it would be pretty cool. Hopefully it will be a good deal.”
When the rubber met the road however,Taylor and his team were unable to get a competitive handle on the all-new combination, and the former Pro Extreme champion and current class elapsed time record holder failed to qualify at the seasons first two races in Houston and Bristol, eliciting the need for change while more time can be placed on the testing and development of the turbo formula.
“I have not given up on the turbos as I think they will be fast. We just need more time to test,” said Taylor. It killed me to not qualify in the last two ADRL races. Me and my team expected more out of the performance side. We are going back to what we know for now.”
Taylor’s turbo engine combo will be placed in the ’52 chevy of Richard Patterson that’s curently on loan to the Taylor team, and testing is planned to ramp up over the next month in hopes of a return between the framerails of Taylor’s Corvette this summer.
The popular driver from Dickinson, Tex. set the national record – a blistering 3.581 – at the Reading event lay May.
