“Doc, are you saying this sucker’s nuclear?”
“NO. This sucker’s electrical,” responds Doc Brown to what powers the time-travelling DeLorean. Well that, and a little plutonium. In one of those rare examples of life imitating art, the DeLorean Motor Company has announced its plans to build the DMC-12 once again. And while it will be all-electric, we doubt it will be travelling through time anytime soon.
Over the past century, Hollywood has helped catapult certain cars into popular culture. Some of them were more deserving of the attention than others. The DeLorean was made famous for its gullwing doors and stainless steel body, but just about everything else on the car was deserving of redicule. From its underpowered engine to its many electrical gremlins, the DeLorean’s saving grace was its role in the Back to the Future movie series.
And now the DeLorean is making a comeback…as an electric car. Jalopnik reports that come 2013, electric DeLoreans will hit the road once more.
We hope it’s a fast EV too, as the original DeLorean was hopelessly underpowered. Electric cars are actually pretty fast when done right, as electric motors provide 100% of their torque at 0 RPM. Anybody who has taken a ride in a Tesla Roadster can tell you that there’s a lot of power in electric cars. If DMC can solve the original DeLorean’s power and electric issues, it would be a pretty sweet retro ride. Just don’t expect it to be cheap, as prices will start around $100,000.
