Not all small-block Ford starters have the same layout or dimensions. If you’re not 100% sure what aftermarket starter will work with your small-block Ford, you’ll need to gather some information before you pick one out. In this video, Powermaster’s Todd Ryden explains the differences and what you need to look for when selecting an aftermarket small-block Ford starter.
It doesn’t matter if your small-block Ford uses a manual or automatic transmission, and even the ring gear teeth aren’t as important as you would think when it comes to the aftermarket starter you use. The best way to confirm which starter is going to work is by measuring the dimensions of the starter’s registration plate and overall size. You can see just how important this is when you look at the distance from the registration plate to the ring gear.
The smaller diameter mounting surface will measure 4.080-inches and the larger mounting surface has a measurement of 4.130 inches. This mounting flange diameter is what will dictate which starter is going to fit the engine’s registration plate.
