Modern, aftermarket Turbo 400 transmission cases have been all the rage in the drag racing world in recent weeks and months. Coan Racing, a longtime transmission and converter manufacturer out of Indiana, has rolled out their new case here at IMIS, bringing to the table an impressive new setup that’s sure to please the racers out there looking for durable two and three-speed transmission options for their high-horsepower combinations.
Coan’s new Turbo II is a stout alternative to the traditional drag racing Powerglide, with multiple ratios, a 30-spline TH400 input shaft (300M Alloy or “Super Shaft”), and alloy main shaft, a 36-element sprag, billet alloy forward clutch hub and billet aluminum low gear hub, a deep aluminum pan, a pro-brake, and several ratio options (1.31, 1.34, 1.36, 1.40, 1.48, 1.56).

The upgraded Turbo II XST, shown here, has all the great features of the standard Turbo II, with the addition of a 1-1/4″, 29-spline input shaft, billet 32-spline bolt-in stator shaft, an ultimate super alloy main shaft, a billet forward drum (available in aluminum or steel), a billet aluminum direct drum, and a a fully SFI-certified bell housing, all adding up to one incredibly capable racing transmission with horsepower on the mind.
According to Coan Racing’s Jason Coan, this transmission kit that converts the two-speed Powerglide into a Turbo 400 is a perfect scenario for radial tire cars, Outlaw 10.5, and even Outlaw Pro Modifieds. The modular bell housing that is a centerpiece of the XST model can be adapted to any engine make — be it Ford, GM, Chrysler, or other common application — and with what Coan boasts as the, “…most ratios available for two and three-speed transmission than any other manufacturer,” this new Turbo 400 offering presents a great package for high-horsepower, heads-up and bracket racers.
