The final spot for the K&N Horsepower Challenge has been locked in, with Jeg Coughlin Jr. earning the fan vote for the eighth and final spot in the 28th annual K&N Horsepower Challenge next month in Norwalk. Loyal fans voted to have Coughlin, driver of the JEGS.com Mopar Dodge Avenger, in this race, proving his popularity by clenching 66% of the total votes since voting opened in April.
A five-time NHRA world champion, Jeg’s drag-racing career has been nothing short of impressive. Coughlin has added plenty to his family’s legacy during his celebrated career. In addition to winning the Pro Stock championship four times, Coughlin has raced his way into the top 10 of the NHRA’s career victories list with 67 national event wins and is also the only driver in the 60 year history of NHRA to win in six different categories: Pro Stock, Comp, Super Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, and Top Dragster.
When he isn’t drag racing, Jeg is full-throttle in the family owned business, JEGS Mail Order. He is the youngest of the four Coughlin brothers that have a decorated, second-generation legacy in the sport.
His place in the K&N Horsepower Challenge will pit him alongside the seven best drivers in Pro Stock throughout the last year. Jason Line currently leads the charge with his Summit Racing Camaro, and should he maintain that position, will face Coughlin in the opening round of the K&N Horsepower Challenge.
The winner of the K&N Horsepower Challenge will receive $50,000, while the runner-up receives $10,000, and each of the two semi-finalists will earn $3,000. The four first-round finishers will each receive $2,500. In addition, a $3,000 bonus is awarded to the number one qualifier at each NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series event.
The 28th Annual K&N Horsepower Challenge will be held as part of the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals on Saturday, July 7, at Summit Racing Equipment Motorsports in Norwalk. Ohio.
