Extreme heat is the ever-present enemy of electronics, and it has no problem cutting a race weekend short when it damages parts. Plug wires are part of the electronics system on your car and are subjected to significant amounts of heat from the exhaust and general engine operation under the hood. To help address the durability of plug wires Pertronix Performance Products released their Flame-Thrower High-Temperature spark plug wires that are extremely heat resistant in any environment.
According to Bill Houge from Pertronix, these wires are for racers who need extra heat protection. “The wires are designed for people who need a wire that can be closer to headers and not have issues. These will be very useful to those in the racing market where there’s just a lot of heat being generated under the hood of the car.”
The Flame-Thrower wires have boots that are ceramic and can withstand temperatures up to 2000 degrees. The jacket on the wire is made of silicone and is very durable. The wire itself is 8mm and has a low resistance value of 500 ohms per foot. Pertronix manufactures the wire so it’s spiral-wound and will be far less susceptible to electromagnetic interference from other electronics. The wires are a cut-to-length universal set, so racers have options of length based on their application. Right now the wires are available with a 90-degree boot, but 45- and 180-degree boots are on the way, as well.
