Kyle Coy’s Sinister Twin Turbocharged 1963 Biscayne

Located in Oklahoma City, where street racing is king thanks to Discovery Channel’s television show Street Outlaws, Kyle Coy, too, has a badass car–one capable of 5.2-second passes. But this 1963 Chevy Biscayne isn’t the start to his story. In fact, Coy has been around racing since his high school years, though not on a track.

“We live two hours from any track, so everything we did was right out of town and actually on old Route 66. I never had a car that I raced because I always loved horsepower, but I was young and dumb and couldn’t afford to get my car out of impound if we got caught.” Even though he wasn’t racing himself, Coy spent a lot of time around and working on cars.

“I grew up building every kind of car and truck that you can think of, from body-drop show trucks to full tube chassis rock buggies. About 4-5 years ago, we got the bug to go back to drag racing. So we built cars and wanted to do Drag Week together.” The ‘we’ being Coy, himself, and Shane McAlary, a regular cast member on Street Outlaws. Though McAlary plays a much larger role in this story than just being a good friend to build race cars and participate in Drag Week with.

After his very own first pass, Coy says, “I was hooked. My ‘67 Camaro was my favorite car but after seeing Shane’s wreck in person–my Camaro was a 3,900 pound leaf spring car that would make a 5.20 to 5.40 pass down any road–I knew the 8.50 cage wasn’t enough, so I put it up for sale and bought this car.” Shane’s crash occurred in 2016, causing major damage to his Blackbird Vega and inspiring Coy to purchase the Biscayne.kc3

Last year, the Biscayne contained a 555-inch big-block, a pair of Dominators and two nitrous fogger systems; however, this year has seen some changes, in the form of a 540-inch big-block with twin Bullseye 83 mm turbos, a ProTorque convertor, Turbo 400 a Dana 60, and Wilwood brakes on all four corners. The car weighs in at 3,100 pounds. “When I bought it, it was an 8.90 index car on one kit. I’m a grudge guy so I was running 5.20 on both kits.”

“Nothing is a better feeling, running right next to another car and edging them out at the end,” Coy says. But with the tornadoes that have run rampant in Oklahoma, the timeline for completion has taken a hit. Two of Coy’s properties were damaged as well as his chassis builder’s shop. While the original plan was to have the car done at the beginning of the season, they’re now hoping to have it finished up by the end of the season. A few little things still remain, particularly in the plumbing department. The plan is to have the car ready for the Sayre Street Races, and possibly Street Car Takeover and Outlaw Armageddon.
