Larry Larson Blasts Into 5.80’s In SCSN Vegas Pre-Race Testing

DSC_4331The undisputed king of street legal hot rods once again raised the street car bar in pre-event testing for the Street Car Super Nationals at The Strip in Las Vegas Nevada. Larson, wheeling his twin-turbocharged S-10 pickup, ripped down the Sin City 1320 in a scant 5.89 seconds, becoming the first street-legal car in the 5.80 range.

Larson’s swoopy ProLine Racing Engines-powered S-10 became instantly viral when it was revealed last year, partly because it had been kept out of the public eye so well, and partly because the truck is basically a very-slightly detuned Pro Modified in street car clothing. After becoming the first street car into the 5-second zone last year just after Drag Week concluded, Larson went on to prove the trucks’ mettle as a serious drag car when he won Top Sportsman at the NHRA’s Kansas Nationals at Heartland Park in Topeka, Kansas, earning himself an NHRA “Wally” trophy and shocking class racers across the nation.

DSC_4596Larson, who has won Drag Week more than anybody else in the event’s history, parked his multi-time winning Chevy II to build the radical pickup for the sole purpose of blitzing the Unlimited class, perhaps sending the message to the powers-that-be at Hot Rod that the class had gotten a bit out of hand. However, this year, perennial contender and 2014 winner Jeff Lutz debuted an equally-radial Camaro that holds the current Drag Week Unlimited class ET record at 6.04. Larson elected to skip the event in 2015, but whether he and Lutz will go head-to-head in 2016 to decide who’s road-worthy Pro Mod is the Drag Week king remains to be seen. If they do, it will truly be a battle of the streetcar titans. But for now, Larson’s 5.89 is the number that street cars all around the world will be gunning for.
