The weather impacts every drag racing event for better or worse, but this weekend, it’s forcing the NHRA to do something different. In a historic move, all of the Lucas Oil Sportsman classes will be run to completion at the In-N-Out Burger NHRA Finals on a Thursday.
There have been countless cases of the weather pushing an event back or even forward a day, but the forecast for Pomona forced NHRA officials to make a tough call. Since this is the final event and there are championships still in play, there is no moving this event. So, the decision was made to run Comp, Super Stock, Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, Top Dragster, and Top Sportsman until there was only one racer left standing on Thursday. Top Alcohol Dragster and Funny Car will get one qualifying run before rolling into eliminations.

“The NHRA sincerely apologizes for the situation, but it is simply out of our control at this point. This is not a decision we came to lightly, but given the negative forecast, which stretches well into next week, we believe this is the fairest situation to avoid keeping racers at the track for several days and with a potential of not racing. We respect the time and financial stake it takes to participate in our events, and our intention is to not waste your time or cost those of you who work more time off. While surely disappointed, we hope you understand, and we thank you for racing with the NHRA.”
With multiple world championships on the line, the stakes will be high each round as all the racers have to navigate this difficult and unfortunate situation.
