The west coast may not be the nation’s hotbed for Pro Modified racing, but there’s no denying that it’s where all the fast guys hang out.
The regions’ top racers have made a habit of running deep into the five-second range over the last couple of seasons, with a slew of low-5.70’s during competition and even a handful of trips into the 60’s, and on Friday, Mike Maggio, who is second only to John Stanley on the all-time performance list, added another monster run to his resume during a test session at the Auto Club Famoso Raceway in Bakersfield.
Maggio, driving the supercharged Maggio Motorsports 1968 Camaro, clicked off a killer 5.681, marking what’s believed to be his fourth pass in the 60’s and his quickest to date. By the numbers, Maggio was .951 to the sixty-foot clocks, 2.54 to the 330’, 3.778 at 203.37 miles per hour to half track, 4.812 to 1,000-feet, and 5.681 at a booming 259.66 miles per hour out of the back gate.
Maggio won the West Coast Outlaw Pro Mod Association season opener in Bakersfield in March, where he qualified No. 1 with a 5.75 and later blasted to a 5.694 at 260.71 miles per hour, resetting the elapsed time record for blown entries. And with the monstrous performance in testing, he and his team appear poised for an encore when the series returns to action in early June along with the Super Chevy Show at The Patch.
