Moser Engineering’s large contingent of factory-sponsored and in-house racing machines are a pretty familiar site in the winners circle of any NHRA or IHRA national and divisional event and really anywhere else they happen to show up, and over the weekend, a pair of Moser banner-carriers were taking names and hoisting hardware on the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series trail — including one esteemed racer earning a rare ‘double’.
Slate Cummings, a member of the always-tough Cummings Racing family out of Louisiana, and a many-time world champion in how own right, earned not one, but a pair of victories at the NHRA’s South Central division meet at the Osage Casino Tulsa Raceway Park, first scoring in the Super Stock finale by bettering opponent Lloyd Wofford on both ends of the race track, going .017 on the tree and running closer to his 8.93 dial-in with a pedaling 9.04. Without more than a few fleeting moments to celebrate the win, Cummings jumped in his Stocker and did the very same to final round foe Brenda Grubbs, taking an .024 to .034 edge out of the gate in a virtual heads-up affair, taking a double-breakout win with a number closer to the 10.50 dial.
While Cummings was doing work in Oklahoma, Danny Waters was down south at the Bristol Dragway, where the Southeast division was contesting its fifth event on the 2014 racing calendar. Waters, with an intriguing driving resume of his own, motored through five rounds of eliminations in Super Comp with his Moser-backed dragster to reach the final round to take on Ray Miller. The match was over nearly as quickly as it began, however, as Miller pulled the trigger too quick, handing the win to Waters, who would’ve been hard to beat with his .004 light.
Interestingly, Waters had only been to one other NHRA divisional final round, and he lost that one to Miller, thus bringing their head-to-head final round record to 1-1.
