Your cylinder heads need to move large volumes of air if you want to make big horsepower. GM’s LS3 cylinder heads are great up to a certain level, but if you’re trying to rotate the Earth with a power-adder combination you need more. Air Flow Research (AFR) developed its new AFR 270cc LS3 Big-Vale heads for those who are looking for maximum horsepower.

The package that AFR put together with its new 270cc LS3 cylinder heads is based around optimizing what the heads can do in the air flow department. By using a 2.200 intake valve, mid-range horsepower is strong and the top end horsepower is sustained longer. This is thanks to the increased curtain area and charge efficiency that’s created by the valve.

AFR’s Mark Ward adds some details about these new cylinder heads.

“The AFR LS3 270cc/69cc 6 bolt Mongoose CNC complete heads are perfect LS3 head for power-adder applications. These heads are best suited for bigger cubic inch builds, so 427 thru 454 cubic-inch engines. A great add on to the head package would be Inconel exhaust valves for higher boosted set up. Being that the intake runner is 270cc with 2.200 intake valve it’s the perfect match for an engine that’s trying to make a lot of boosted power.”

These heads are offered in a six-bolt pattern for those who need elevated gasket stability when there’s increased cylinder pressure. If your build is using a traditional LS block and gasket setup, you can also get these heads in a four-bot pattern.

You can learn more about these heads right here on AFR’s website.
