The kickoff to the 2015 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season in Pomona is less than a day away, and ESPN will be back with more than 100 hours of live and tape-delayed programming, along with five live national event broadcasts. But take a quick look at the broadcast schedule for the Winternationals an beyond and you’ll notice something is missing.

While the NHRA’s Sunday eliminations coverage will continue to be featured live online via ESPN3 at all 24 national events, series officials have decided to pull the plug on the live Friday evening qualifying coverage that had been a staple of the ESPN agreement for more than two years. This move was confirmed last week in a report issued by Competition Plus.
Those who have had access to and have been regular viewers of the live ESPN3 coverage over the years may recall that back in early 2012, NHRA officials made an eleventh-hour decision to axe their online coverage entirely — which at the time was only their Sunday eliminates broadcast. However, an outcry of complaints were directed at the NHRA in the immediate wake of that decision and in short order, the online component of the ESPN programming was returned to the schedule, where it has remained in the two seasons since, eventually growing t include the popular live Friday night coverage.
