ORTC Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia SAME DAY Coverage

SELECT COVERAGE BY DAY:

It’s Friday morning and a little warmer than yesterday was.  Quite a few more racers showed up overnight and they had to park quite a few of the late arrivals in what would normally be the spectator parking area. I spoke with a couple of the racers in that area.

Our event coverage is sponsored by the good folks at Mickey Thompson Performance Tires and Wheels

Glen Carry from Rossville, Georgia owns this single turbo alcohol burning Nova. Billy Smith will be driving the car in the Radial vs the World class this weekend. This is the first big event for the car and they are looking for their first 4 second pass here today.

Tab Jordan will be driving this Mustang for Steve Wheeler in BMF Extreme Street. The South Carolina based team has been 5.10 at other tracks which should put them in the hunt if the can duplicate that type of performance here. They have a small block Ford on two foggers under the hood.

Walt Drakeford and the Real Speed crew made the trip up from Clearwater with two cars. Jeff Gibbud's 7.50 index car and this Mustang owned by Mike Burkhart. Charlie Pixley handles the driving duties. It's got a new 434 ci engine fom Bennet Racing and has once race on it. So far it's been a 5.28 @ 130+ and they are looking for a .20 flat on the first hit according to Walt.

In what is arguably the most interesting and controversial vehicle on the lot. Owned and driven by Bobby Dodrill this Chevy Truck has a 541 Keith Black Olds with Dart Big Chief heads, and a PSI D rotor screw blower. What makes it stand apart is the all wheel drive. Last year they ran a centrifigal clutch but have switched to a Bruno drive and Neil Chance covnverter and a custom Liberty 3 speed transmission. He has been 3 flatt to the 330' last year but had problems with the prior set up shifting. If they get a full pass Bobby said it should run 4.40's. Also a few more sponsors have come on board for the truck this year like - Edelbrock, Libery Trans, Goodyear, VP Fuels, JW Transmissions and several others

Another racer that did quite well yesterday was Brian Goss. The south Florida racer says he has a completly stock 87 Mustang with a special order Vortech YSI supercharger. Whatever the combo he has the fastest 275 car on the lot that I know running a 5.12. Brian was made famous recently by the Goss Knowsss viral vidoes by Dragraceplace.com. They are looking to run one hit like this, then swap to an F1C blower to see if can run a little better.

They are making the calls for first qualifying session now. They are set to begin at 11AM put only one car is in the lanes so far. Ill be back later with first session notes.

Ultimate Round One Qualifying

Brian Goss 5.10 @ 137
Clint Lonon 5.16 @ 136
Bruce Roberts  5.25 @ 133
Charlie Pixley 5.26 @134
5                 5.28 @133

Brian Goss has low ET and the top spot in the TRZ Motorsports Ultimate Street class after one round.Goss' team mate Mike Freeman had to pedal and showed some smoke after the lights.

Clint Lonon ran a 5.33 yesterday during testing fresh from updates at TRZ Motorsports. Today they turned it up for a new best 5.16 today taking the number two spot.

Check out the photo gallery for the awesome wheel standing action in Ultimate Street. I have to say I don’t think I have ever seen so many cars on the bumper back to back to back.

Radial vs the World Round One Qualifying

David Wolfe  4.51 @ 172
Scotty Gaudagno   4.61 @ 158
Chris Daniels    4,64 @159
Josh Peel   4.67 @160
Carlton Thompson   4.68 @163

Tony Ridenour was the first car to run well with a 4.75 @ 151 but wound up seventeenth. The top qualifying position changed hands several times afterwards and ended up with David Wolfe from Texas with shocking 4.51 @ 172. He is definitely looking to be the first to the 4.40's after that pass.

Big Daddy Duane Gutridge got into the wall just a bit after the finish line on his pass. He noticed some water coming out and lifted but it got on the tires and he went into the wall. He is ok and the damage is repairable, just not here so they are done. Mike Kimmis is eighteenth with a 4.81. One of several Outlaw 10.5 cars on the lot on the small tires.

Another racer out of Texas is Kyle Huettel. The 2002 Camaro has a an 870 Fulton on board.

We have 74 cars that made a qualifying pass in round one in the premier class.

BMF Extreme 275 Round One Qualifying

Travis Thomson  4.99 @ 145
Gary Jones  5.06 @ 139
Kevin Neal  5.068  @ 144
Brad Medlock  5.07 @147
Shane Crowden 512 @139

Travis Thompson gets the proud honor of being the very first car in class to run a 4 second pass.

Right now we have some down time for track clean up after Daniel Farris had the throttle stick in a wheelie. All four wheels were in the air and the car crashed down hard and cut a transmission line.

Ultimate Street has there second section wrapped up. There are few shakeups to the field with Kevin Scrimsher moving up to third and Anthony Smith right behind him. Eric Kenward put’s his wagon in fifth now ahead of Charlie Pixley who did not improve.

David Wolfe has been quicker and quicker every pass and during the second session today ripped off a 4.49 @ 172 to be the first man in the 4.40’s on a radial tire, or a true ten five. I spoke with Donald Long about the new record “Radials 1, Slicks 0” Check out our exclusive video below. Special Thanks to Matt Sears from Outlaw Radial.net for the top end view.

Qualifying is all wrapped up for today but the fun is not over. We had the special arm wrestling match between Kevin Caps Lock and Don Long with Don Long putting him down after about 20 seconds or so. I’ll have video later. We also have a band set to play here in a bit so i am wrapping this up short and sweet to grab some food and good tunes.

In Radial vs the World David Wolfe stays on top of the field with the 4.49. Then it’s Team North’s own Dave Hinzman with a 4.58 @ 170. Scotty Gaudagno reset his own nitrous record with a 4.58 @ 163 taking third spot. Texas Racer Kenjo Kelly moved up to forth. Right now the bump for the Radial vs the World is an unherd of 4.86.

Troy Pirez stepped it up in this session as well, all the way to fifth with a 5.08 @146

Ronnie Wilson is in the field at 33rd position with a 6.19. He wheelied in this session and had to lift

I think wheelies were the order of the day. Here Bobby Flippin hangs them past the tree in his S 10 Chevy. He is 20th with a 5.41 @ 133. It's a 91 model with a 434 ci SBC on the bottle and has been at least low 20's last year.

I don't have a qualifying sheet for the Outlaw 330' Jr's. There several cars in the 3.8x range though and the kids have a lot of fun. I will have some more info coming tomorrow on this class.

Joe at Fast Forward Race Engines was kind enough to lend me his 4 wheeler so I could make the pit trek to bring you some late night news with out totally freezing. Thanks a lot man, you know it’s a long day out here and cold too.

Red Tazz Express out of Texas , driver Clint Le Blanc. The car has a 116 MM turbo and engine by Jeff Naiser. Josh Linsdy was looking over the tune in the lap top when I stopped by , he drives another car seen below. I got the news from this crew on fellow Texan JoJo hurt it and is on the way back home allready.

I went waay up to the front of the pits and found these guys in the corner. Alonzo Floyd out of Texas is the owner/driver. It's an 86 Camaro with a 758 ci BBC from Scotty's Racing Technology out of Spring Hill Florida. They get the award for being pitted farthest fom the starting line this weekend.

I herd many people commenting how beutiful Shane Parker's car is today. They were just wrapping up a trans and converter swap. They have not had too much luck getting down the track yet so are looking to get into the field during the final session.

John Baessell burned up a piston and is waiting for a replacement being driven up from South Florida. He is currently 23rd in the Ultimate Street field.

Number one qualifier in the BMF Extreme class Travis Thomason also hurt a piston on their last hit today. They had the new slug in and shoud be good tomorrow. Joe Gilbert was inside the trailer cleaning off the head. He owns Morirson Construction and is the main sponser of the operation. They run Inducion Solutions nitrous system.
