McLeod Racing’s Paul Lee teamed up once again with legendary Funny Car racer Gary Densham over the weekend to campaign the McLeod Racing, Boninfante Friction, and Lawson Rock & Oil flopper at the sport’s most prestigious drag race, the Chevrolet Performance NHRA U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis. In addition to the three primary and associate sponsors, Lee and Densham carried our Dragzine logo into battle once again, and while we certainly aren’t a biased bunch here, we wouldn’t have minded at all to see Lee in victory circle on Labor Day.
Said Lee as he prepared to tackle the tough Funny Car field at Indy: “I am excited to again race in NHRA’s biggest event of the year and to team up with Gary Densham and his team for this event!” Lee stated. “One of the highlights during the weekend that I always look forward to is the annual Friday Night qualifying session along with the extra qualifying session to help tune the car.”
“I know with the consistency of Gary’s cars we have the possibility of pulling off an upset victory putting the McLeod Racing Nitro Funny Car in victory lane!” an excited Lee continued.
During qualifying, Lee struggled in the opening session on Friday evening, but he and Densham turned all the right knobs at the right time on Saturday evening in the event’s quickest and fastest qualifying session, going to No. 1 early in the session with a stout 4.07 at a slowing 297 mph, before eventually slipping down to eighth as the remainder of the class shuffled up the order.
The McLeod Racing Dodge Charger concluded qualifying on Sunday in the No. 11 spot in the quick field, his best start in five attempts at Indy, earning him a date with John Force in the first round of eliminations. Unfortunately, Lee was a little too amped up for his opening round salvo, double-stepping the throttle and leaving .055-seconds too quick on the tree.
Lee and Densham will be back on the Mello Yello trail at the Auto-Plus NHRA Nationals in Reading next month, where they’ll be looking to improve upon their qualifying and eliminations efforts at Indy.
