The majority of cars that you will see at the drag strip on any given weekend would most definitly fall into the category of classics and muscle cars. All of that old school muscle harkens back to the heyday of drag racing, and goes hand in hand with the Goodguys Rod & Custom Association. The Goodguys are not just all about great old school show cars, they also put on one hell of drag race with their Goodguys Vintage Drag Racing that’s held at select events.
Out of the four drag racing events that the Goodguys put on, no location has a more rich history than the one held at the Lucas Oil Raceway, home of the fabled NHRA U.S. Nationals. This event had been on a hiatus for over five years until 2013, when the Goodguys brought it back, to the delight of racers and fans alike. Fans get to see all kinds of killer classics and some amazing exhibition cars at the event each year.
At the Indy event, the vintage racing is all quarter-mile and open to 1972 and older vehicles only. The classes are broken down into Hot Rod I for cars from ‘54 and earlier that run 7.50-11.99 and Hot Rod II for cars that run 12.00 and slower. There is a class for newer classics too, the Street Machine I class that’s home to ’55-’72 cars that run 7.50-11.99 and Street Machine II that is for 12.00 and slower muscle cars. If that wasn’t enough. there were also the flame throwing, nitro-guzzling Fuel Altereds and the Midwest Nostalgia Pro Stocks were in the house doing all the cool staging games and dry hops.
