As if Jeg Coughlin Jr.’s NHRA Pro Stock championship-winning Dodge Avenger wasn’t quick enough, the Dodge boys will be sporting a brand-new Dodge Dart body for NHRA Pro Stock competition in 2014. According to reports, both Coughlin and Allen Johnson will have the new body in time for the Gatornationals in Florida in just a few weeks, where Coughlin Jr. will continue his championship defense against all comers.
The current Avenger body didn’t appear optimized for all-out competition, but the new Dart body looks mighty slick, with a small windshield opening and deep-set wheel positions. While the Pro Stock body has obviously been optimized for chassis size, it shares the nose design with the street-going Dart – and that’s about it. The rest appears to be all about winning.
While we weren’t able to find any other photos of the new Dart body anywhere online, it appears as though Dodge has high hopes that the NHRA association will drive buyers into the showrooms to look at the new Dart.
The old “Win on Sunday, Sell on Monday” adage still applies – or does it? The new Dart isn’t exactly a rear-wheel-drive performance car, but it does offer lots of on-board pieces that will attract compact-car buyers, so we can’t blame Dodge for working to put the Dart in front of the NHRA-viewing public. Will it be a successful gamble? Only time will tell.
