Typically most tracks will offer a sportsman tree during a test-n-tune session and maybe a .400 pro tree, but for those competing with a .500 pro tree the choices are usually slim. This left many of the west coast bracket and index racers with the NMCA WEST series without much to do over the summer vacation, so a few of the diehards started talking about organizing their own series. Racing on a quarter-mile track in southern California is essentially impossible due to closure of the drag strip in Fontana, but there are a couple of eighth-mile tracks that are still in operation. Racing an eighth-mile beats not racing, but many of these drivers are willing to travel to make use of a quarter-mile facility.
Steve Cox and Dal Truby Sr. started talking about the lack of events in the area and how they might get a bit rusty over the break, so naturally the conversation turned into plans to organize a bracket race. On Friday, May 24th, 2013 the guys came up with a plan and within a week they had scheduled a date, found a track and 13 sponsors. Friends and fellow racers have joined in and asked their own sponsors to help support the series; in fact, many of the racers who plan to participate are kicking funds from their own businesses and/or offering gift certificates for services at their own shops. Cox managed to persuade his sponsor Chris Norris at Triple C Agency to act as the main sponsor for the series.
The first event will be held at Famoso Raceway in Bakersfield on June 28th and 29th. Friday, June 28th is a test-n-tune session that is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. and two races will be held on Saturday June 29th at starting at 9 a.m. and again at 6 p.m. Two more races are in the works, but no date is set as of yet so make sure to check out the Triple C Agency .5 Pro Tree Series Facebook page for rules, updates and sponsor information.
