The former Hurley Blakeney-owned “Silent Thunder” Angio Laz-sponsored turbocharged 1995 Ford Thunderbird is up for sale over on Racing Junk. This machine has been campaigned in the Competition Eliminator AA/AT class by Mark Wolfe for the past 4 years and on occasion in Pro Street. Wolfe plans on switching to the B/Altered category in 2012. In the mid 1990’s this was the quickest and fastest door car in the NHRA Drag Racing Series, and it currently holds the world record in the AA/AT class and has been as quick as 6.40 at 218 mph. This car has a rich history and is very well known.
The chassis is a double frame rail design that was built by former NHRA Pro Stock Truck racer, Kim Smith, and power comes from a 419 cubic inch small block Ford with twin 91mm Garrett Turbochargers. Ken Duttweiler originally built the engine for Hurley and it’s been updated with different cams and turbos since then. We’re talking big horsepower here and the transmission is not something you see very often in a twin turbo car. It’s a Liberty five-speed taking the power from a dual disc 10″ Ram clutch. It must be pretty wild to be pulling the levers in this twin turbo monster.
The engine features electronic fuel injection and the intake air is cooled through a custom air to water intercooler. Just about every function on this machine is monitored by the Racepack V300 data recorder. Many updates such as new tin work, paint, carbon fiber wheel tubs, exhaust and a cowl induction hood have been done recently. Another big change you may have noticed is the turbos have been moved from the middle of the hood to down low behind the front wheels.
If you’re looking for a very quick Ford that will really turn some heads, this might be for you. Wolfe is willing to sell the car turn key, rolling, or without the transmission and clutch. You could jump right into Comp, Pro Street, or Top Sportsman.
