The Radial Tire Racing Association (RTRA) has been working hard to give small-tire racers a place to compete for prestigious year-end championship titles in X275, Ultra Street, and Limited 235 since 2016. Now, with X275 creator John Sears at the helm of operations, the drag radial sanctioning body is rapidly growing and its 2022 season selection is looking stronger than ever.
“We’re being inclusive so people from different areas of the country can gain RTRA series points without having to travel so far while creating diversity within the established venues in strong markets that we visit,” shared Sears, who carefully curated an event schedule that intentionally overlapped several other series to accommodate as many competitors as possible. “We worked with ProMedia’s NMRA/NMCA, Duck X, PSCA, and others to keep the rules streamlined and offer a great bang for the racer’s buck.”
With 18 eligible events on the comprehensive 2022 RTRA 12-month schedule to choose from, racers will automatically accrue points from their best outings with a maximum of seven selections in Neal Chance/Precision Turbo & Engine X275, six in the Vortech Superchargers Ultra Street Shootout, and five in Haltech/SP Tools Limited 235.
Sears specifically chose to make minimal rule changes during the pre-race off-season to ensure stability for participants coming into the new year, although swifter changes will likely be made during the season to ensure parity.
RTRA’s participants showed their support of Sears’s efforts with a strong showing at the first event of the year, the U.S. Street Nationals a Florida’s Bradenton Motorsports Park in late January. Although the race was unable to be run to completion due to challenging conditions, Sears recognizes the importance of rewarding those who made the effort to be there. “We have qualifying sheets and ladders, so we will honor tech points and qualifying points from the event,” he affirmed.
With both participation and payouts growing each year since its inception, the RTRA offers something a little different for racers who want to compete at a high-level without breaking the bank or committing to an intensive travel itinerary while also enjoying great media exposure.
The RTRA proudly pays back to fourth place finishers and expects to extend that even further in the near future thanks to the generous support from series sponsors such as High Horse Performance, ProCharger, Holley EFI, Brodix, ToyMakerz, and Barrett-Shook Motorsports.
The individual classes, too, have garnered a tremendous amount of backing by major brands. Neal Chance/Precision Turbo & Engine X275 receives additional backing from FuelTech, Energy Manufacturing, Vortech Superchargers, Mickey Thompson, Nitrous Outlet, VP Racing Fuels, and M&M Fabrication. In the Vortech Superchargers Ultra Street Shootout, JSC Race Cars, Precision Turbo & Engine, MPR Racing Engines, and Nitrous Outlet have all come onboard while Haltech/SP Tools Limited 235 is also made possible by Ultimate Converter Concepts, Forced Inductions, RC Components, SFE Settle For Excellence Services, IRD Racing Carburetors, and Salvato Designs.
