Rig Of The Month: Flying A Peterbilt Truck And Stacker Combo

As the official trailer/motorcoach dealer of Dragzine, Flying A Motorsports’ extensive lineup of new and used motorhomes and toterhomes, race car trailers, stacker trailers, car haulers, and cargo trailers will be highlighted here in a monthly feature known as the Rig Of The Month.

This month’s race transporter is a sharp red combination ready to haul your team from coast to coast.

“This 2004 Peterbilt Road Tractor looks like brand new,” says Alan Cape, President of Flying A Motorsports. “The truck has 286,000 miles on it but has been gently used. It’s equipped with a Caterpillar C15 diesel engine — many professional transport companies call this a million-mile engine for its long life.”

Located at the Flying A Motorsports center in Cuba, Missouri, the Peterbilt is coupled to a 2016 T&E aluminum frame stacker trailer with lounge. The trailer has some of T&E’s popular features such as a 48-inch side entry door, .050-inch screwed aluminum exterior walls, and their own T&E solid/hydraulic auto lift.

Black coin and aluminum tread flooring flow throughout the trailer and lounge area along with abundant aluminum cabinets and toolboxes.

This truck/trailer combo has power capabilities like few others — the Peterbilt is equipped with both a 20-kilowatt generator and an auxiliary power unit (APU) generator. The APU is a small, efficient diesel generator used for light overnight 110-volt use. Both generators are connected to the Freightliner’s diesel tanks.

Two bunk-beds, microwave, and refrigerator conveniences are located within the Peterbilt while the trailer lounge offers a sleeper sofa, fold down bunk-bed, kitchenette, full bath, and much more.

Speaking of generators — on the trailer side, a Powertech 12KW diesel generator powers the trailer’s 50-amp electrical package. There is a Girard fully automatic awning, Bard 2.5-ton A/C system with heat, and all the plug-in receptacles needed for the lounge, work area, and pit exterior. The trailer is lighted with an extensive array of interior lighting and LED exterior work lights.

“One of the key considerations about the Freightliner truck is that it is a 2004 model,” Cape explains. “This is very desirable when it comes to the pre-emissions value of no DEF fluid requirements and no diesel particulate filter (burner) equipment. These are trucks valued by racers who don’t want the hassles of the late model emissions equipment.”

The Peterbilt tractor is equipped with an automatic transmission and is titled as a motorhome for ease in licensing and traveling. You are never going to run short on electricity with this rig. The Peterbilt has both a 20kw generator and a small auxiliary power unit while the trailer has a 15kw generator enclosed.

Amenities in the truck include two bunk-beds, 90-gallon freshwater tank, microwave, mini fridge, and television/DVD player. The comfort features of the lounge area of the trailer include a kitchenette, full shower, toilet, sink bathroom fed via a 90-gallon water tank with a water heater. Other lounge features include a fold down bunk-bed, sleeper sofa, 26-inch LCD flat screen TV, microwave, and refrigerator.

“The lift in this trailer is one of the best designs there is," Cape says. "It allows for really low cars to easily get onto the lift and their lift design is awesome.” The T&E trailer is finished with white and red coated aluminum throughout the lounge and work areas.

“The trailer has far fewer miles under the wheels than the truck. The two were not always married together but look like they were,” Cape adds. “The previous owner was an avid drag boat racer. Since the boats and related equipment are very light, the working load has been very easy on this rig.”
