Same Day Event Coverage from ADRL SGMP

April 24, 2010

Welcome to Saturday’s ADRL event coverage on Dragzine.com. So far today there is rain in the forecast for most of the day at this time.  It has been raining for a couple of hours and that looks to continue. There was a nitrous bottle explosion here this morning before we arrived but there is no official word on the matter at this time. As soon as we have some solid information we will have that for you. In the mean time we will be in a holding pattern. I will be adding some more photos from Friday into the gallery so please have a look.

Special thanks to our event coverage sponsor Mickey Thompson Tires

Ok folks we have official word that we are going to try and get the race off today. There is a window of about 4-5 hours of clear weather. Qualifying is set from Friday’s session, there will be no fourth round due to the weather complications.

Morning Pit Notes

Jason Hamstra’s crew is getting ready for racing this morning setting the air gap in the hat. They are qualified sixth in Pro Extreme and will face Texas based Gaylen Smith’s 57 Hellair in round one.
Ron Miller is swapping out a weak valve spring in the XPS 04 Grand AM this morning. They are on the bump and have to run Pete Berner in the Summit Racing sponsored 09 GXP.
Brain Gahm is qualified second in XPS, though they are off a little in ET from usual but Brian feels they are in good shape for race day with the Jery Hass built 07 Mustang. He is matched up with Steven Boone.
Former clutch man Steve Robinson now does engine tuning for Richard Penland Motorsports XPS Entry. He has been with RPM for five years and they made the switch to ADRL from IHRA’s discontinued Mountain Motor Pro Stock class. Penland has one of two former Robert Patrick Pro Stock cars here this weekend.
Josh Peel is here this weekend with a new car in Extreme 10.5 and they made it down on the fourth pass with a 4.71. Huntsville Racing Engine takes care of the twin turbocharged powerplant. EC1 Race Cars out of Michagan built the car and Josh handled the turbo plumbing, fuel management is an Alan Dudley MFI unit.
Micheal Neal landed seventh in XT5 with a 4.84 @ 180 and will face Spiro Pappas in round one who qualified second with a 4.008 @ 188 MPH.
Team Titan is looking to improve their ET today after going over last nights data on the 3.99 pass. If weather and the track co operates look for a .95 out of the little turbo charged 4 cylinder Scion.
Chuck and Joseph Lawrence crew on eighth qualified Bob Bertsch’s Kasse powered Extreme Pro Stock 2007 Mustang. Bob will run Richard Penland in first round.
Brian Daniels did not qualify yesterday after fighting a clutch issue. They found the problem last night but the rain shortened qualifying left them with no chance to get in this morning. The team finished fourth in 2008 and thenth in 2009 with the ADRL in Pro Extreme.
Pro extreme is the class to watch today as Sheikh Khalid set low ET, high MPH and the record in the class last night in the third session. The overcast sky should keep track temps down and we look forward to some great racing with a bump spot of 4.04 held by John Stanley’s 68 Camaro.

Extreme Pro Stock

Bob Bertsch took the win over Richard Penland who had problems and slowed to a 4.92 @ 106.  Aranson got a holeshot win over Elijah Morton with a .031 light and 4.165 @ 174 to the losing 4.163. Dean Goforth lost his match with Doug Kirk who will face off with Cary Goforth in round two after his win over Team Aruba driver Trevor Eman.

Steven Boone got lucky in his race with Brian Gahm who got out of shape and had to lift. Ron Miller did his job on the tree against top quaifier Pete Berner but could not hold on, 4.09 beats a 4.21

Extreme 10.5

Extreme 10.5 has a short field here in South Georgia with only eight cars. Josh Peel was an alternate and made the field in Jeff Naiser’s place. He left on Kenny Doak and manadged a 4.69 @ 154 in the new car but was outrun by Doak’s 4.21 @ 189, his quickest run of the weekend. Next up was  Todd Moyer on a single with Moyer running a nice 4.12.
Micheal Neal upset Spiro Pappas on a hole shot win. Pappas’ was late with a .081 to Neal’s .046 his 4.12 winds up on the losing end of neal’s 4.15.
The final pair in the session was Gary White and Greg Buschmeyer’s 63 Corvette. Buschmeyer put a big holeshot on White but shut down early with a 5.21 @125 to White’s stright 4.05 @ 184

Pro Nitrous

The next pair was Todd Howard and Randt Weatherford’s awesome Blue Camaro. Howard left on him but Weatherford drove around with a 3.98 @ 186 beating Howards game 4.01 @ 182 in a very close race, the margin of victory was only .0067.
Bob Rahaim matched up with Greg Godwin who also left first and ran quicker, winning the round with a 3.93 @ 186. Again both cars had their best runs on the weekend.Rickie Smith and Johnny Pilcher were next with Pilcher leaving first and running quicker getting the win over Smith’s 3.97 with a 3.96 @ 187. Both cars ran their best runs of the weekend

Another upset was up next as Jim Halsey got treed then had to lift after getting out of shape against Keith Baker.
Terry Murphy and Burton Auxier were the last pair down in Pro Nitrous with Murphy getting out first with a .026 light. Auxier got loose and pedaled but was out of shape and hit the wall after the finish line. He is OK. Murphy won the round

Pro Extreme

Wild Wes Johnston is on a roll this weekend in Pro Extreme putting Joshua Hernandez out in round one with a 3.77 @ 202. The next pair down was Gaylen Smith and Alex Hossler with Hossler out first and a 4.07 as Smith shut down and coasted to a 9.04.
Scruggs and Kelly Martin were next with near indentical reaction times. Scruggs ran a fine 3.73 to take out Martin who was on his best run of the weekend, a 3.80 @ 200.
Joey Martin and Frankie Taylor were next and Martin lit the red putting himself out while Taylor went on to run a 3.70 @ 204.
Tutterow spun the tires just after the launch pedaling the car but slowing to a 4.31, not nearly enough for Barklage’s 3.86 @ 194.
In the upset of the weekend John Stanley gets the win over Sheikh Khalid after his red light by just .002. Quain Stott took the win over Bubba Stanton’s Camaro with a 3.76 @ 204 to Stanton’s 3.86 @ 197 in his best run this weekend. Jason Hamstra took down Terry Leggett with a 3.80 @ 198, Leggett clicked it early after getting loose.

Mad Man Frankie Taylor made the semi finals today in Pro Extreme after quailfying in the second position behind KH. He faced Quain Stott who was qualified third. At the hit the blower belt schredded and he was left to watch Stott go on down track for the win to fave of with Carpenter

Pit Notes

John Stanley broke a rocker and stand on their first hit today. They have replacement parts on hand and there was no damage internally.
Haney Motorsports have a two car effort here this weekend with number one qualifier Frankie Taylor and Wes Johnston who sits eighth. Here Wes adjusts the clutch between rounds. On their first hit a fuel line came loose on the pass, Wes lifted and still ran a 4.02.
John and Jim Salemi and Mike Stawicki make up the G Force Race Cars crew. Not currently qualified in the Pro Extreme field there are just three hits on this new car. They tested in Mooresville but broke the ring and pinion and had no spare on hand to make repairs so are just learning the new car. Stawicki also builds engines for Alex Hossler and Kirk Wilmes. Gotta love it when the kids are involved with workign on the car.
Ron Miller from Lebanon Ohio runs Extreme Pro Stock and they are changing the rear gear ratio between rounds in an effort to pick up some performance.
Trevor Eman improved his ET in the second round of XPS from a 4.21 to a 4.18 in the team Arubo Extreme Pro Stock entry.
Steven Boone is another XPS entry was fourteenth after round one and improved from a 4.28 to an .18 in round two. They came here untested and are working the kinks out after some off season changes in their 2006 Cobalt. Engines are by Allen Competition in Tennessee.
