The National Hot Rod Association and the Cordova Dragway Park in Illinois made the joint decision and subsequent announcement on Tuesday to cancel the upcoming Aerospace Components NHRA Unleashed event, scheduled for Friday and Saturday, July 15-16. In it’s place, the Cordova, Illinois facility will host their weekly fun night and bracket racing event.
“The decision to cancel the Cordova Event was multi-fold,” said CDP Track Operator Scott Gardner. “The current economic conditions along with what NHRA is going to announce were the ultimate deciding factors.”
The Cordova event joins the No Problem Raceway Park in Belle Rose, Lousiana, whose NHRA Unleashed event was scheduled to take place last weekend (June 17-18) but was postponed well in advance of the race date, making it two consecutive events on the seven-race 2011 schedule to go uncontested.
A poor turnout of racers at the most recent NHRA Unleashed event at the Tulsa Raceway Park earlier this month followed by news of the race cancellations has led to the usual online rumors, but according to NHRA officials, a major announcement will be made in the coming days that is said to be a positive and exciting development for the series that will aid in its future growth and carry it through the rest of the 2011 season.
