Single-Turbo Corvette Runs 8’s, Driven To And From The Track

Big Mike's turbo Vette

Big Mike Rumain is big time, but not really because of his ’99 Corvette FRC (Fixed Roof Coupe). He’s a big dude. He used to be Sylvester Stallone’s body guard. When you can make a C5 Corvette weigh 3,750 pounds, you’re big time.

To make the car move to the tune of eight-seconds in the quarter-mile, Big Mike reached out to his longtime friend, Howard Tanner, who owns Redline Motorsports in Pompano Beach, Florida, where he lives. The Redline team whipped up a 416-in LS3 stuffed with forged Callies pieces, a set of Trick Flow GenX Street/Strip 235 heads, a custom fabricated rear-mounted 88mm single turbo, a Redline/Comp Cams custom grind, and stuffed a 4L80E transmission out back. By the time Tanner calibrated the stock ’99 PCM the black beast laid down an easy 880-rwhp on E85.

Rumain's Corvette is a Fixed-roof coupe, or FRC, as they're known. The FRC Corvettes were designed to be lighter than its Corvette "coupe" cousins.

Since Rumain lives in south Florida, A/C is a must, and his Corvette’s is fully-operational, thank you very much. The Corvette still has its stock IRS and 12-year old Bilsteins, but those features aren’t holding back the car, as we see it. Last Sunday his first pass was a 9.38, but with a little tuning from Redline Motorsports’ Jeremy Martorella, Rumain ran a pair of 8.98’s at 153 mph and change with no additional power; just a more refined tune using a AMS1000 boost controller.

Rumain is used to having a fast Corvette. His car was reportedly the first C5 in the nine’s, and that was in naturally-aspirated trim. The car also ran eight’s back in 2008, but it wasn’t as streetable as it is today. These days, he drives it to and from Palm Beach International Raceway (PBIR), run in the eight’s, and drives it home. For Rumain, it’s a 150-mile round trip to-and-from PBIR.

Does your street car got it going on like Rumain’s turbo ‘Vette? Let us know.
