Southeast Gassers To Be Showcased On The Discovery Channel

The Southeast Gassers Association, the nostalgia drag racing organization that has endeared itself to drag racing fans young and old all across the South and beyond, is set to make its small screen debut on Wednesday evening as part of a two-hour special of the hit reality series Moonshiners on the Discovery Channel.

In the highly-anticipated episode, Moonshiners star Josh Owens competes in the top-tier A/Gas category alongside Southeast Gassers regulars in a four-door Chevy II with a Ford engine under the hood, all built just for the show by series founder Quain Stott in eight days. The one-hour segment will also hone in on some of the series’ racing stars with interviews and unaltered racing footage from the Carolina Dragway.

I don’t have a daughter but if I did I feel this is what it would be like sitting her out in front of the whore house, you know, to see what happens …is she gonna’ go in and get a job? How well did we raise her? – Quain Stott

For Stott, the show is both exciting and nerve-wracking, but in the end, is an invaluable opportunity to showcase the series that he’s poured his heart and soul — nevermind his own finances — into to the world.

“I’ve been on TV before, when I raced with the IHRA, and I was always very, very proud,” says Stott. “But this time I’m very proud to be able to showcase my baby. This is something I’ve put forth eight years of my life, a lot of effort, and about a quarter-million dollars of investment. And hopefully this is going to be something that will make it go to the next level and get it in front of people, so they will see my mission and so we can help our racers get some sponsorship. But I am nervous … because it could hurt us if it doesn’t turn out right. I don’t have a daughter but if I did I feel this is what it would be like sitting her out in front of the whore house, you know, to see what happens …is she gonna’ go in and get a job? How well did we raise her?”

“The biggest problem I had that day [of filming] was that day it rained and we got started about five hours late,” Stott continues. “So there weren’t a lot of spectators there, and it looked bad in the background. My biggest regret is we chose to do it on a day when the rains came and it rained all day and the weather was horrible. But we already had the film crew there. We’re very, very proud of our spectator count — unlike other racing organizations, we measure our success not by how many cars we have but by how many spectators have. To me, that’s what makes a racing organization successful. And we measure it by repeat customers.”

Stott takes great pride in the series, the only such organization in existence that still strictly abides by 1967-era Gasser rules. And he affirms that no television opportunity is going to change that approach.

“People have been giving me feedback and telling me, ‘oh this thing is going commercial, it’s going to be big-time and not the small maw-and-paw operation it used to be.’ And I promise them that is not the case. We’re doing this simply to try getting the word out on our message. And I want to ensure to the fans that no matter how this show comes out, whether it’s silly like some of them do or is a hit, we’re not selling out to become a big operation. I’ve been open that I want the Southeast Gassers to become a little more professional behind the scenes so we can make it profitable, but I want what the fans see to stay the same,” Stott explains.

“But we’re not selling out to a TV show. It’s a one-time deal. It could become a series, and if it does that would be wonderful. If this show gets good ratings, we’re hopeful they’ll come back to us to do a series.”

The Southeast Gassers episode will air on Discovery Wednesday evening at 10 p.m. ET.
