Steer Straight With Columns From Chris Alston’s Chassisworks

After you’ve added tons of bars to your jungle gym known as a roll cage, it’s probably time to get a removable steering wheel, as well. There are several ways you can add this feature to your racecar and it’s going to take some fabrication to make it happen. If you’re looking for a totally custom setup for a steering system the best place to start would be a new steering column. Thankfully, Chris Alston’s Chassisworks has everything you need to make your steering wheel removable, all in one place.

These units can be modified to fit your specific application in several different ways, plus they save some weight in the car. Chassisworks offers columns with 1-1/8-inch outside diameters and 3/4-inch tubular shafts that come with or without the U-joints and hub. If you need a super lightweight option that weighs just 9-pounds, Chris Alston’s has a stainless steel column that’s 2-inches in diameter and uses a 3/4-inch 4130 steel shaft.

Now, if you already have a steering column and just need a quick release system, Chassisworks once again has what you need; the hubs that Chassisworks offers come in a standard 3-hole, Grant GT 5-hole, MOMO 6-hole, and undrilled configurations. Each hub uses a polygon drive with a preferred-locking collar latch, this helps keep your steering wheel secure on the column and reduces the possibility of it slipping off during a run.

To make finishing off your steering column simple Chris Alston’s also has a full line of U-joints, couplers, and steering shaft supports available. To learn more about these products check out Chris Alston’s Chassisworks website right here.
