After six events held in the 2014 Mickey Thompson Tires Outlaw 10.5 National Championships Series, New Jersey’s Steve Gorman is leading the points in a hard-fought battle over 31 other competitors. Gorman has been on a roll, winning three of the four events he’s entered, with the fourth called by curfew.

In fact, of the four events — MIR on the second weekend of April, Cecil County Dragway once each in April and May, along with Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown this past weekend, Gorman hasn’t lost a single round of racing in 2014.

Gorman’s twin-turbo Proline Racing 540-cube 481X-powered Mustang normally runs in the 4.0 to 4-teen range, and in his most recent victory, he took out Ron Green in the final round to extend his points lead over second-place TJ Kasper, driving Joe Copson’s 2010 Camaro.

Gorman had an easy path to the final round in Englishtown, as his first round opponent, Brian Penna, didn’t make the call, then he faced off against Lou Sciortino in the second round, Sciortino had a huge nitrous backfire and didn’t make the finish line, setting up Gorman with a bye into the final round. There, his opponent, Green, had engine trouble and wasn’t able to get to the starting line, allowing Gorman to streak to a 4.33 at 157 MPH and wrap up the win.

“We fought the car all weekend, it kept going left and I was out of it by the 330 on every run. It was a lucky win — we didn’t have one good pass all weekend. It was a gimme’, and I’m not proud of it, but it’s a win and I’ll take it,” he says.

The Jamie Miller/Steve Petty-tuned twin-turbo machine gets help from a number of sources — Precision Transmission, Jamie Miller, Pro Torque, Competitive Wiring, Injection Connection, Skinny Kid Racecars, J&E Performance, and Rossler Transmissions among others. Gorman also credits the support he gets from his wife, his family, and his team at Precision Transmission for giving him the ability to get to the track to compete in Outlaw 10.5.

The car was updated over the 2012-13 offseason at Victory Racecraft by Miller and Bill Gilsbach, and ever since the car’s been on a tear in the Northeast Outlaw 10.5 wars.

“The car’s been a 4.05 in testing, and in competition we’ve been a 4.09. In all reality, when the air comes back around at the end of the season we’ll have no problems going 3.90’s and running 200 miles an hour. I want to be the first to the 3.90s — there’s only one first,” says Gorman.

We look forward to seeing him take on the challenge as the Mickey Thompson Cup Series continues throughout the rest of the 2014 season. For more information on the complete line of Mickey Thompson Tires & Wheels products, check out their website.
