General Motors created an iconic performance platform when it introduced the fourth-generation F-body. The Chevrolet Camaro and Pontiac Trans Am built on this chassis quickly became favorites among enthusiasts who love V8-powered, rear-wheel-drive performance cars.
Today, these vehicles can still be found at drag strips across the United States competing in a wide variety of classes. Their enduring popularity continues to drive aftermarket development, with new performance parts regularly hitting the market.
Team Z Motorsports has long been known for its Mustang suspension and chassis components, but the company has recently expanded into the 4th-Gen F-body market with a growing lineup of products. From tubular front-end kits to suspension upgrades, Team Z identified several areas where improvements could be made. The latest additions to its catalog include lightweight door hinges and a bolt-in steering column system.
Lightweight 4th-Gen F-Body Door Hinges

There is plenty of room for optimization on a 4th-Gen Camaro or Trans Am, and one area Team Z targeted was the factory door hinges.
“The 4th-Gen F-body hinges from the factory are prone to rust, and the bushings wear out,” explains Team Z’s David Zimmerman. “We decided to create a lightweight version with bronze bushings that was strong enough to hold a stock door but could also be used with a composite door. Our hinges allow the door to be removed without unbolting the door from the hinge.”
The hinges are CNC-cut from high-strength steel plate and feature hardened pins, replaceable bronze bushings, and Grade 8 hardware. They also incorporate safety latches that prevent the door from coming off the hinges until it has been opened approximately 20 degrees.
For racers and enthusiasts looking to save weight while improving serviceability, the new hinge design offers several advantages over the factory setup.
A Lightweight Bolt-In Steering Column Upgrade

Anyone who has removed an OEM steering column from a 4th-Gen F-body knows just how heavy and bulky the factory unit can be.
That prompted Team Z to develop a lightweight, bolt-in steering column kit designed specifically for the platform.
“The steering column was a part we wanted to create, but we also wanted to provide options on the intermediate shaft so it could be used with our K-member,” Zimmerman says. “This allows you to use aftermarket steering racks, such as a Pinto rack, while utilizing a common spline steering joint. It’s a great product because of the rack options and the ability to use a quick-release hub and aftermarket steering wheel.”
The steering column mounts in the factory location, eliminating the need for additional fabrication. To reduce weight while maintaining strength, Team Z manufactures the column from 4130 chromoly tubing. A pair of lightweight aluminum locking collars keeps the steering shaft properly positioned within the column.
More Performance Options For Camaro And Trans Am Owners
As the popularity of 4th-Gen Camaros and Pontiac Trans Ams continues to grow in drag racing and street performance circles, aftermarket support remains strong.
With products like lightweight door hinges, bolt-in steering columns, tubular front-end kits, and suspension upgrades, Team Z Motorsports is expanding the options available to F-body enthusiasts looking to improve performance, reduce weight, and modernize their cars.
