The Irish Enjoy Their Drag Racing Too!

Mopars are scarce enough here in the states, never-the-less across the pond over in Ireland, where we saw this cool vintage Dodge Dart taking on a multitude of other cars in their very own drag racing event. Looking at the background of this event, it seems to be taking place at some sort of carnival/town fair-esque event at St. Angelo’s Airport in Enniskillen, but hey, any kind of drag racing is a step in the right direction. For the most part, the cars are fairly stock (there isn’t exactly a speed shop around every corner there, ya know?) but when a set of classic muscle cars line up, even if they aren’t the quickest ones on the planet, it takes us back to what grassroots racing was back in the day.

Check out the video posted up on the For A Bodies Only Forum, as well as some cool pics of other Mopars around Ireland.

The event was organized by ‘Sideways Racing,’ but the American Muscle Cars In Ireland (AMCI) club received a special invitation to participate. Sandie and Paul from AMCI provided us with the cool video. As for the cool ’68 Dart the poster is sporting, it’s a GTS model – packing a 340 Mopar small block backed up by a good ole’ 4 speed transmission. It’s pretty much stock for now, but a 408 stroker is in the works for future modifications once he feels like he’s gotten all he can out of the stock engine package.

Ireland surely isn’t a very big country, but what the hey, who else thinks a couple of mainstream drag strips would be a cool thing to have over there? As of now, legal drag racing in Ireland is almost non-existent, though a group of folks created a website titled DragIreland.com, in hopes of bringing a drag racing facility to the country. The idea is rather fresh and some are still warming up to it, but if participation in events like this continue to grow, we just might get to see a large drag strip over there for all to enjoy.
