This For-Sale Texas Drag Strip Needs To Be Saved

This Texas drag strip needs someone to step in and save the day.

The Big Country Race Way (formerly known as the Abilene Dragstrip) has been put on the market for $2.2 million, and the listings suggests numerous other uses for the property besides drag racing, including redevelopment for a storage yard, reuse as company property, or an RV park. The size and scope of the property could, of course, appeal to vehicle storage corprations, which have caused the demise of other drag racing facilities, so it’s important Big Country doesn’t fall into the wrong hands.

Big Country is an 1/8-mile trail built in 2003, that’s located in west Texas, just west of Abilene on Interstate 20, and approximately 150 miles west of Fort Worth. The property covers 53.67 acres, and is a full service racing facility that caters to sponsors, drag racing participants, and fans, with a concrete racing surface, covered seating for more than 500, air-conditioned restrooms, full concession, Accutime timing equipment, over 10 acres of paved parking, 58 electrical hookups, more overflow parking with asphalt millings (over 250 marked spots in all), lighting and on-site fuel sales.

The agent, one of the original builders of the facility, says this is a turn-key operation that could be open a week after closing. “This facility has more potential uses. There is plenty of land for development. It would make a great storage yard with easy entrance and exit on I-20, lots of concrete for parking and storage. This could possibly be an RV park with 58 electrical hook ups and an RV dump on site. This property would make an excellent storage facility with lots of concrete and electrical hookups as well as improved parking areas and extra land for development,” it notes.

Additional features included a lit return road, large turnout for dragsters, double-wide return road with space to pull over and pick up parachutes, a new sound/broadcast system that was put in in 2008, a snack bar pit-side with covered seating, and restrooms on both sides of the facility. The drag strip itself is 2,100 feet long, of which 700 feet is concrete, with a 90-foot burnout area and a 200-foot-long sand trap.

Big Country has hosted the Southwest Jr Dragster Series, Texas Diesel Madness, Texas Drag Racing Association
Texas Muscle Car Club Challenge, Big Country Swap Meet, along with the annual Spooktacular race and Thanksgiving Throwdown, King of the Track, Goodguys, NHRA.tv Challenge, and NHRA JDRL Challenge.
