Top Fuel drivers Tony Stewart and Doug Kalitta were both uninjured in a wild high-speed collision in the second round of eliminations Sunday at the NHRA Reading Nationals presented by Nitro Fish at Maple Grove Raceway in Pennsylvania.
Kalitta won the drag race, 3.78 to Stewart’s 3.80, but his dragster appeared to have a failure in the front suspension just before the 1,000-foot marker, folding the wheel over at 335 mph and leaving the veteran driver unable to control its trajectory. Kalitta careened across the centerline and struck Stewart, turning the points leaders’ dragster onto its side and into the concrete guardrail. Stewart, visibly shaken, had to be assisted from his race car by the NHRA Safety Safari.
“I don’t have a damn clue,” Stewart responded to NHRA on FOX’s Bruno Massel when asked what happened from his vantage point. “I don’t remember any of it. The first thing that I remember is them waking me up down here. I’m not sure what happened, but it appears to have been pretty massive. I’m as curious as everybody else what happened — we’re not where we are supposed to be at the end of a run here, so I’m confused. I’ve got one hell of a headache, and it banged my left hand up, but I’ve been through sprint car crashes way worse than this.”
Both Doug Kalitta and Tony Stewart were examined onsite by NHRA Chief Medical Officer Dr. Surface before being released.Â
“The left front tire blew or went down,” said Kalitta. “It just happened so quick that there was nothing I could really do. Fortunately, Tony and I are good, and that’s really the main thing. That’s probably the worst [crash] that I’ve had [in my career]. I’ve been very fortunate over the years, but it’s all part of it.”
Per NHRA regulations, Kalitta can pull a backup chassis out to continue eliminations. Kalitta returned just over an hour later and defeated Steve Torrence, 3,81 to 3.83, to assume the points lead and advance to the final round.
