Press release from NHRA:

By virtue of a special drawing, the Top Sportsman and Top Dragster blocker positions for the 2010 JEGS Allstars event will go to the NHRA Pacific Division and the NHRA Southeast Division, respectively. The two classes were added to the prestigious program at last year’s 25th Anniversary JEGS Allstars event;  2010 is the first year of competition for them. Officials held the drawing last weekend at the O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Spring Nationals presented by Pennzoil.

The JEGS Allstars event, held Saturday, June 5, during the United Association Route 66 NHRA Nationals, pits the top points earners form NHRA’s seven geographic divisions against each other in the culmination of a yearlong points battle. Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series competitors in Top Alcohol Dragster, Top Alcohol Funny Car, Comp, Super Stock, Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, Super Street, Top Sportsman, and Top Dragster vie for team and individual honors and a share of the $119,000 purse. The defending JEGS Allstars champion in each class is invited back as the blocker and final competitor in the eight-car competition in each class.

Additionally, to guarantee full eight-car fields in all classes of JEGS Allstars competition, the blocker-selection process will be expanded. Currently, the blocker position is awarded to the defending JEGS Allstars champion and then to last year’s runner-up if the defending champion is either the current year’s division points leader (and would compete as the division’s rep) or cannot attend the competition.

Additions/changes are outlined below.

For all classes in 2010: If for any reason the defending JEGS Allstars champion and the runner-up cannot compete as the blocker, the blocker position will be awarded to the No. 2 driver in points from the defending champion’s NHRA division. If the No. 2 driver cannot attend, then it will go to the No. 3 driver and so on. Example: The previous year’s JEGS Allstars champion is the blocker for the following year. If he or she is the division rep, then the previous year’s runner-up would be the blocker. If the runner-up is the division’s rep (or cannot attend the competition), the blocker position would go back to the defending champion’s division and to the No. 2 points finisher in that division.

For all classes beginning in 2011: If the defending JEGS Allstars champion cannot compete as the blocker for any reason, the blocker position will remain in the champion’s division and will go to the next-highest JEGS Allstars points driver. Example: If the defending JEGS Allstars Top Alcohol Funny Car champion is also the division Allstars points leader, he or she will compete as the division rep, and the No. 2 driver in Allstars Top Alcohol Funny Car points in that division will go in the blocker position.
