Veteran drag-and-drive competitor Dave Schroeder walked away from what may have been the most violent crash in the history of the genre Monday at the Orlando Speed World Dragway during the opening day of Sick Week.
The well-liked Canadian racer, a former overall winner at Drag Week, was making his first official run of the week-long horsepower tour in his big-cubic-inch, nitrous oxide-assisted, Pro Modified-style C7 Corvette when he lost control near the 1,000-foot mark and struck the wall. From there, the car careened across the centerline and turned onto its roof, striking the wall in the shutdown area with nearly 200 mph of fury.

Schroeder emerged from the car and was checked over and released by on-site emergency personnel, and remained in good spirits despite the devastating degree of damage to the car co-owned by he and John Ens. Schroeder suggested in a post-crash interview that the pair may return to racing this season with their famed 1966 Corvette.
