Pro Outlaw 632 competitor Mike Murphy, from Coral Springs, Florida, briefly found himself in the warmest spot in all the state of Florida on an unseasonably cold weekend at the U.S. Street Nationals at the Bradenton Motorsports Park.

Murphy, behind the wheel of his 2010 model Chevrolet Camaro, was loaded up to try punching his way into the qualified field in a weather-shortened program during Saturday’s second session of 632 when his mount lost traction and careened nose-first into the guardrail. According to post-incident reports, the throttle hung open on Murphy’s machine once the tires broke loose on the chilly racing surface, leaving him but a mere passenger in a rolling inferno.

Murphy’s car burst into flames shortly after making contact — the initial fireball briefly engulfing the entire racecar before retreating to the engine bay. Fortunately, Murphy climbed from the car without injury and the short-lived (but ferocious) fire was extinguished before the blaze could spread to other parts of the charred racecar.

“Unfortunately our teammate Mike Murphy had a throttle hang and put him into the wall and on fire,” said teammate Cory Voss. “Fortunately, it’s nothing we can’t handle at Voss Wheelie Bars shop on our in house chassis jig to get it back in running order.  We will take this time and update the car to current standards including moving motor placement, update safety features and new adjustable four-link brackets. Mike will drive one of our shop cars for the remainder of the season and be ready for PDRA season opener at Galot Motorsports Park.”
