Outlaw Pro Modified racers Bill Futch and Raymond Commisso got tangled up in a wild accident during Saturday evening’s qualifying session at the U.S. Street Nationals at the Bradenton Motorsports Park in Florida, causing extensive damage to both cars that took them out of contention for the weekend. And it all played out live for the shocked viewers at home through the live broadcast from Motormania TV.
But absolutely no one was more shocked than Commisso himself, who found himself turned around and into the wall with no warning whatsoever.
Futch, in his turbocharged Chevy Monte Carlo (the car that formerly belong to Mike Moran), was lined up in the right lane alongside past NHRA Pro Mod regular Commisso in his supercharged Camaro in the late evening session as both drivers tried to improve upon their position going into eliminations. At the drop of the green, Commisso motored out to 330-feet before making a hard move toward the centerline. At that point he wisely lifted and released the parachutes to help reign the car in.
Futch, meanwhile, was still at the starting line building boost and didn’t move until seconds after Commisso did. Once he did, however, his Monte Carlo also a move to the centerline, but he couldn’t corral it and slipped across the centerline, where he plowed into the back of the slowing Commisso at a pretty high rate of speed. The impact sent Commisso nose-first into the right hand guardrail, while Futch’s car spun around — nearly flipping over onto its roof — before finally coming to rest just before the quarter-mile clocks.
Quite an unfortunate situation for both drivers, but most importantly they both climbed from their battered race cars and will hopefully make their returns to the track in short order.
