Video: Racers Edge Tuning And MMR Build Insane Mod Motor For WCHRA

monroe3Greg Monroe of Racers Edge Tuning out of Downey, California and MMR have come together to build one badass Coyote engine that’s destined for competition in the WCHRA’s Outlaw 8.5 class – just check out the startup vid posted above, along with the video below where the engine turned out 1,478 horsepower on the dyno.

The engine has a forged stock crankshaft and billet connecting rods stuffed into MMR’s Pro Mod sleeved and filled Coyote engine block. On top is a set of Boss Mustang CNC’d cylinder heads and a quartet of Comp’s finest camshafts. Turbo boost comes from a pair of 67mm units.

Unfortunately, as with many high-horsepower builds, Monroe found the engine’s limit on the dyno in the run below. A connecting rod failed, leaving the engine with no power in one hole.

“The engine is going back to MMR today to see what happened. The rod damaged the skirt of that piston and punched a hole in that cylinder sleeve. It looks like the engine will make close to 2,000 hp. We were still creeping up on the rpm and only got to 6,000, where it made 1,478 horsepower. The engine is set up to rev to 8,000,” Monroe tells EngineLabs

It’s probably a good thing that the engine failed on the dyno instead of on the racetrack, where the possibility for leaked fluids comes into play and the risk of an accident as a result. We’re pretty sure that Greg’s not too happy about the failure on the dyno, but he is excited to find out just how much power the engine will make when it’s completely healthy again.

WCHRA Outlaw 8.5 is a class that runs on the tiny 8.5-inch slick – and Monroe’s going to try to harness 2,000 horsepower and put it to the ground on a tire that provides a contact patch around the size of your hand. Greg’s promised to share more video with us when the engine is back together and testing the limits of the dyno, so stay tuned to this wicked build!
