Walker Racing And Their ’99 Dodge Avenger Gunning For 6.50’s in Top Sportsman

It all started back in 2002 when this father/son team got their hands on one of Larry Morgan’s ex-pro-stock Dodge Avengers, and set her up to run with a 572″ motor in the Super Gas, Super Comp and Top Sportsman ranks. Fast forward to 2006 when Wes Walker’s son Steven got his competition license at 18 with his first pass being quite impressive – a 7.92, and Steven’s talent was really starting to show. All the way up to 2008 this team was on fire running Mopar-specific events and some Division 5 stuff never going down in the first round and making quite a few finals, but 2009 went to the wayside so the team could rebuild the car with more power for 2010.

We aren’t just talking about a few “little” changes folks, pulling the old drivetrain out to make way for a 588″ Mopar with Predator heads, a Hogan sheet metal intake, Quickfuel carburetors, Tek headers and a NOS 2 stage fogger system that should put roughly 1800+ HP in Walker’s hands come race day. While they were able to click off a best of 7.77 at 175, but they’re shooting for some solid 6.50’s on the spray with this new set-up. With these fresh changes on board, Walker looks to be a top contender at 22 years old in the Midwest Top Sportsman events, along with some Mopar-specific shows and any other Top Sportsman events they can make it to.

The car looks great the way it is, but they’re looking to do away with its current look by getting a new wrap on it and some different wheels. Like a lot of homegrown teams working with a tight budget, Walker Racing is currently actively looking for sponsorship support for their racing efforts. The Walker’s are hoping to get her out soon for some 1/8 mile test hits, then see what Midwest Top Sportsman and other Top Sportsman events they can make it to. Will 6.50’s be a normal Sunday cruise for this Mopar powerhouse? Stay tuned for updates to find out!
