NMCA Nostalgia Muscle Car star and 2011 class champion Andy Warren hit the track this past weekend at the NMCA’s event at Gateway Motorsports Park in Illinois with high hopes. Warren, who was fresh off a win at the Atlanta stop in the tour, was looking to back up his performance and did so in fine fashion, taking home the Wally after a tough weekend for Warren Racing. He campaigns alongside his brother John (who competes in Xtreme Street) as part of a two-car team. Andy’s built his car using one of FUELAB’s 41404 carbureted digital fuel pumps to go with one of the company’s fuel pressure regulators to control the fuel flow to his Knieriem Racing Engines-built 427-cube small-block Chevrolet engine. After a hard-fought weekend, he ended up with his seventh Wally by taking out the rest of the competition on race day. John, who runs a FUELAB custom block fuel pressure regulator and nitrous feed regulator on his machine, ended up in the runner-up position in Xtreme Street.
John had issues on Saturday during the qualifying sessions — a transbrake button malfunction causing all sorts of havoc.
“The Caprice was killer all weekend, and despite the challenges with John’s car, I didn’t lose my focus. We had extra help from good friend and local 8.5 racer Craig Watkins. That helped take a lot of the load off of me and helped me put my mind on winning. After issues with John’s car Saturday night we thrashed hard until the early morning to get his car fixed.
“The transbrake button engaged as he got about 60 feet out, causing the car to pound and shake. That caused the rear shocks to bend, the Cal-Trac bars to bend, and did damage to the drive shaft around the u-joint area. Thanks to NSS racer Mike DeChicco who had an extra set of shocks, and Cartel Manufacturing for fixing the drive shaft, we were able to get the Nova back together. The results after that were surprising!” says Andy.
A fine showing for the team — and one that puts Andy into serious contention for the points chase in the class with two wins in three events. John is also in the top ten in Xtreme Street and appears ready to make his own push for the championship.
