The limited production run of Chevrolet COPO Camaro factory race cars may not be so limited after all.
Although we’ve yet to hear an official confirmation from the GM and Chevrolet Performance brass, a new page on the chevroletperformance.com website indicates that a 2013 year model edition of the popular COPO Camaro is in the works, or perhaps even green-lighted for production some time next year.
The 2012 model, unveiled last November at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas to rave reviews, began production in the late summer and made its national debut at the NHRA U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis, where it earned equally rave reviews from the select teams that took delivery of their cars ahead of the biggest drag race in all the land.
Just 69 of the 2012 COPO Camaro’s are being built, meaning these are incredibly rare machines that their proud owners can consider themselves quite lucky to have gotten on the list to purchase. The COPO’s, available in a multitude of flavors for a price of around $90,000, are continuing to be completed and delivered to their new homes, and by the beginning of the 2013 racing season, should be in full force on the NHRA, IHRA, and ADRL racing scene. Just last week, Chevrolet showcased the final 2012 car, an ultra-rare convertible carrying the No. 69 tag, at the sprawling Chevrolet booth at SEMA.
With Ford still leading the way in the performance department with their Cobra Jet and the unveiling of the twin turbo concept model at the SEMA Show last week, it will be interesting to see what Chevrolet has up their sleeves if they do indeed forge ahead with a 2013 COPO.
