Renowned English techno DJ and music producer Carl Cox is involved in a number of forms of motorsport, but it’s drag racing where he takes the wheel himself, and he recently heated up the tires of his new 1971 Plymouth Barracuda Pro Mod.

Cox actually has two Pro Mod Barracudas now, with the first one currently located in the United Kingdom and awaiting approval of its NHRA-legal, Pro Line Racing Hemi/ProCharger combination for use in the European Drag Racing League. Crew Chief Rodney Taylor is there lobbying for the acceptance of the drivetrain to the rule-makers.

“He made his first pass down a dragstrip at Santa Pod Raceway in the UK when he was 19, so racing there again with the Pro Mod is coming full circle for him,” Taylor said.

While that is happening, Cox had RK Racecraft and Homier Fabrications put the finishing touches on a second Barracuda that is based on a Jerry Bickel Race Cars chassis and Larry Jeffers Race Cars Barracuda body.

According to Taylor, the Plymouth is currently fitted with a ProLine Racing raised-cam MH7 Hemi engine and ProCharger F3X-140 supercharger, along with an M&M Transmission Turbo 400 transmission.

RK Racecraft installed the drivetrain and plumbed the car before handing it over to Homier Fabrications, which wired the entire chassis and installed the FuelTech FT600 ECU which is tuned by Mikey Rees.

Cox and his team visited Galot Motorsports Park in Dunn, North Carolina, for a test session where on the second pass, an issue arose with the chute deployment and despite Cox’s efforts to slow the car, it eventually impacted the retaining wall.

“On the second pass, it caught fire and melted the front,” Taylor explained of the end result. “The chassis is fine and the motor is back at Pro Line already. Homier is re-wiring the front of the car and Bickel is repainting the front end.”

Cox has been piloting Pro Mods for four years and he purchased the Barracudas for a couple of reasons.

“He likes the car, the style of it, and it’s safer for him to get in and out of it because it gives him more room in the cockpit,” Taylor told us. “Later this year, we might swap it over to run the NHRA in 2024. We’re waiting to see their calendar, the European Drag Racing series calendar, and his work calendar.”
