Motorsports may see its revival near Billings, Montana after the Yellowstone Drag Strip sold to a new owner on December 8th. The state-of-the-art facility was sold to one lucky bidder as a turn-key operation, according to Rick Young & Sons Auctioneers. But get this, the sale of the facility and all its property was not some multi-million dollar transaction. In fact, the new drag strip owner was able to secure the whole operation for about the same cost as an average sized house.
The drag strip, whichĀ is locatedĀ about 14 miles outside of Billings, has been for sale for nearly two years now according to the Billings Gazette. When it first opened in 2003, it was the property of five investors. Over the years, however, four of the investors sold their shares to the remaining investor, Ron Omo. When Omo died in 2008, he left the drag strip and all of its property to his wife Molly. Unfortunately for motorsports fans, Ms. Omo didnāt want to run a drag strip and decided to put it up for sale shortly after she acquired it.
In the auction on Thursday, everything that made the drag strip a turn-key operation was sold as one unit to the highest bidder. According to Rick Young & Sons Auctioneers, the facility included 160 acres of land, a control tower, concession stands, grand stands, ticket booth, beer garden, restrooms, paved pit area and a 4,300ft track with a 1,300ft competition surface. The winning buyer also got all the drag stripās computers and software, including the Compu-link timing system and LED tree. The track ambulance, parts truck, Kawasaki Mule, Prairie 4-wheeler, FMC sweeper and rubber laying machine were also part of the package.
There is no guarantee that the new owner will be able to run a successful drag strip, but the hope is there. Gordon Clark, one of the original investors told the Billings Gazette that the track can be profitable but has to have the right people running it to make it a success.
So how much does a full turn-key operation like the Yellowstone Drag Strip go for? Well, hold on to your hats boys and girls because the strip sold for only $310,000. Not bad considering many people spend about that sameĀ amount for a house .
