Lizzy Musi debuted her brand-new Robert Hayes Race Cars-built 1969 Camaro in the best way possible, capturing her first “Street Outlaws No Prep Kings” invitational win of the season early Sunday morning in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
The win, which came after a lengthy mid-summer hiatus for the series, moved her up to third in the individual standings, with a 13-5 round record. But more importantly, it gave her team, led by Kye Kelley, a big boost in the points. Her team is now in a two-way tie with Ryan Martin’s squad for third, and just 30 points back of Dave Comstock’s team for first.
Lizzy began her march to the title with an opening round win over Oklahoma’s own Chuck Seitsinger and Chuck Parker in the first two rounds. She then drew a lucky single in the quarterfinals, after her would-be opponent, Ryan Martin, crashed his Camaro in a second-round win a couple of hours prior and could not make the call. That propelled her into the semifinals where, in a titanic battle decided by inches, she defeated Larry “Axman” Roach in Stephen Brindle’s “Game Changer” Ford Mustang. Her team captain, Kyle Kelley, came up just a car length short of making it a team final, as he dropped his own semifinal match with Robin Roberts.
In the finale, Roberts’ ProCharger-boosted Camaro got crossed up just past the 60-foot marker, and Lizzy Musi sailed right down the center of the lane to victory. With 110 round wins, Musi now stands alone at third all-time in the series in round wins. Her win also assured that the nitrous oxide combination, which is represented by just three cars this season — she and teammate David Gates, who is 10th overall, and Jerry Bird — still shares plenty of parity with the boosted combinations under the present rules package.
The series will now take a week off, before resuming at Firebird Raceway in Eagle, Idaho, August 25-26.
