Today started out overcast but it looks like the sun is starting to make an appearance around 10:30 AM. The forecast has a chance of rain but the radar is clear for now. The track is hot with index and brackets running now while the heads up portion should start after 12 noon. For those of you at home or in the pits there is a live feed broadcast by Motormaniatv.com covering the on track action. Stay tuned through the day for exclusive photo coverage here at Dragzine.

I spoke with Jim Hairston about the team this morning to get the skinny on the previously West coast based operation. Driver Clint Hairston took the 2010 PSCA Pro Street championship with this car then took off part of 2011 as Jim's youngest son and crew chief Jake took a job tuning for Troy Coughlin using this car to run the NMRA Pro Mod series for seven races while awaiting the new car to be finished. Since then Jake has taken a position with Jegs' Pro Stock engine shop in Charlotte so the car is now based there and the rest of the team flies here.
The family operation was started in 2001 wih a 70 Camaro body on nitrous and later hooked up with Kenny Dutwieler and made the move to a small block twin turbo combination and getting this Bickel GTO in 2008. They set numerous records in PSCA with a best there of 6.08 @ 240, and holds the prestige of being the fastest small block in NHRA history with a 5.91 @ @ 249. Father Jim is the Director of marketing and product development at Pertronix and they are the main sponsor on the car. Other sponsors include Lucas Oil, Patriot Exhaust which is a division of Pertronix, Precision Turbo. The engine they are using this weekend is based on a Dart billet block with Little Chief heads displacing 396 cubic inches and topped with a Hogans intake. The Hairston Racing schedule for 2012 includes here, Joliet, Budds Creek, Bowling Green and Indy and also try to run the SCSN in Vegas again.
Things are a bit busy this morning in the Steve George pit as they have been struggling some with the new engine, an 822 ci. 5.2 bore space piece from Steve Schmidt. They did run a 4.36 1/8th in Bradenton at the US Street Nationals but fell off pace and are adjusting the tune this am to get back to a baseline.
DeMarco Racing has three cars here this weekend wih Andrew sitting out after loosing a head gasket in his Drag Radial Mustang in qualifying. David's Grand National is doing well running a 6.51 in qualifying but the run was disallowed at the scales for being light on the run by ten pounds. This was after they had added ten pounds to the car expecting to weigh in at 3160. After that they added weight to rescale the car and came up at 3170 so Dave isn't to happy about losing his best run but it's one of those racing deals and he knows he has the capability to run with the other top qualified cars. Last year the car was updated with a new front suspension at Victory Racecraft and a new engine from Pro Line Racing with an aluminum block for over hundred pound loss. His first full run since the updates was the 6.51 pass on Saturday.

Jeff Lutz was hurt and started the car to take the tree for points against Jimmy Keen. Bill Lutz did his job with a fantastic .001 light but Clint Hairston drove by with a 6.08 @ 244 for low ET and top MPH of the round.
Brian Hicks was paired with Jim Monson in the combined Mickey Thompson/SCT Pro Outlaw class for round one. Monson went red and matched his qualifying performance of 6.94 with 205 MPH through the lights as Hicks got loose and crossed the center line behind him, pulled the chutes and did a great job getting the car under control sending Monson to round two.
Darren Breaud was paired with Keith McCoy but go a single after the Trans AM wasn't able to start. He ran a 7.85 @ 137 after shutting i down early.
Dan Kroll got the win over Dan Saitz with a clean 7.72 @ 182 in the second pair of Afco/Stainless Works Drag Radial.
Jason Brock had luck go his way in first round as David Hutnick struck the tires after going .037 on the tree to Brock's very late .167 on his best run of the weekend.
Phil Smith was paired up with Danny Shemwell who left first but went into a wheel stand and watched Smith go on to a clean 8.07 @ 175. Bog Kurgan also advanced over Trovato after a nitrous backfire at the hit.

In round three of Mickey Thompson 10.5/SCT Pro Outlaw the first pair out was Meshaw and LaFerriere with Meshaw putting up a .004 light to take the early lead. Past half track Meshaw got a little wiggle then the car made a hard left into the other lane and he pulled the chutes but wasn't able to save it and scrubbed the wall and the car went on it's roof and started sliding. Frank is ok and the damage is mostly cosmetic but will need a new roof and windshield. We will be updating to get you up to speed and have it live as soon as possible.

Pro Street had a very interesting weekend with several racers busy making repairs, rebuilding engines or swapping them out, swapping cars and a new record for Chris Rini with a 6.031 and running the table with the event win. The Rini crew did an engine swap during qualifying to prepare for the next event, running only to the 1/8th on Saturday to get it dialed in a bit before hitting it hard. Clink Hairston seemed to be the only threat running a 6.08, then a 6.06 @ 145 against Jimmy Keen but the chutes came late and he ran the car into the sand box at the end of the track. The incident with Frank Meshaw then the True Street program gave them plenty of time to prepare, though when the lights came down in the final the car didn't move and Rini put up a 6.06 @ 234 MPH for the win. You can count on the Hairston crew wanting another shot at Rini especially with Clint now with the MPH record this year

Eric LaFerriere had luck go his way on route to the final with Mike Murillo in an NMCA vs. NMRA final. After a round one opponent broke bye, Jim Monson bursting the intercooler losing water and coming up light on the scales in round two and a near miss accident as Frank Meshaw crossed the center line and went over on his roof in the semis one might say he had an easy road but the car runs very well and LaFerriere put up a game race in the final with Murillo taking the win by about .06 at the stripe.

The crew consists of Kevin's girlfriend Lubel Mirafelix, Bob Travelbee and Brian Mullaney.

Bob Kurgan earned a single in first round and took the tree and backed out, after that he improved ET every round and ran a 7.76 @ 181, his best of the event in the final with Jason Brock, who debuted his car here this weekend and also put up his best numbers in the final. Who can argue with a runner up finish in a new combination.

Dan Kroll and Jason Lee met up in the Afco/Stainless Works Drag Radial final with both racers having it relatively easy getting here and Lee having the more consistent car this weekend. Kroll had the starting line advantage but struck the tires early and clicked it early, Lee did the same a bit farther down track cruising through to a 7.97 @ 134 taking the win for PTP Racing and Strange Engineering. Besides having to swap out the transmission early Friday the rest of the weekend was uneventful and without breakage.
