Drag racing has long been a sport where family bonds are forged in horsepower and celebrated on the winner’s podium. The recent Summit Racing Equipment Mid-West Drag Racing Series (MWDRS) Spring Throwdown in T-Town at Osage Casino & Hotel Tulsa Raceway Park took this tradition to an unprecedented level, as the Wells and Pennington families etched their names into the history books with a stunning display of collective dominance. The weekend was headlined by a remarkable father-son sweep from the Wells family. Aaron Wells drove his newly painted “Bullitt” Mustang to a hard-fought victory in the highly competitive Stroud Safety Pro Mod class. After battling through early qualifying gremlins and a challenging first round in which his car stuck in low gear, Aaron Wells found his stride, ultimately defeating Jacob McNeal in the final with a 3.619-second pass.
Adding to the family’s triumph, his 16-year-old son, Tyler Wells, made an absolutely jaw-dropping debut in the Compressed Air Supercharging Top Sportsman category. Freshly licensed and driving the same car his father once campaigned in Pro Mod, Tyler stormed through a tough field to claim his first-ever “big car” victory, beating Todd Stallbaumer in the final round.
The Pennington family also had a weekend for the ages, accounting for three significant victories. In Icon Forged Pistons Top Dragster, the Wade Pennington-owned entry, driven by Keith Youngblood, secured the event win over Kati Laughter. The family’s success cascaded into the junior categories as well, with Karlee Brundidge winning the Race Star Wheels Pro Juniors title against Abigail Wilson, and Jovee Brundidge taking the Zimmerman Properties Sportsman Juniors win over Brooklynn Mayee. While other strong performances highlighted the event, including Ray Martin’s Pro Mod Slammers win and Jim Whiteley’s J&A Service Funny Car victory, the spotlight undeniably shone brightest on the Wells and Pennington clans. Kenzie Wells also added to the Wells family’s successful weekend with two round wins in Pro Juniors.
The Spring Throwdown in Tulsa showcased not just fierce competition but also a display of family passion and generational talent powering multiple victories. It shows the deep-rooted family nature of drag racing and sets an inspiring tone as the MWDRS looks ahead to its next event, the Shakedown in M’Town in Martin, Michigan.
