There have been a host of $100,000 paydays in the long history of our sport, but perhaps none have ever occurred on a Wednesday.
Goodview, Virginia racer Brent Austin earned the most lucrative payout in no-prep racing history August 22nd when he defeated Jeff Lutz in the finale of Bristol Dragway’s $200,000-to-win, 32-car Street Outlaws battle royale.
Austin, driving his ProCharger-fed Megalodon Chevrolet Camaro, ousted a number of primetime hitters on his path to the six-figure payday, including Lutz, Rich Bruder, Jerry Bird, and Larry Larson. The final three rounds of the invitational contest were concluded on Wednesday after rain showers cut the program short late Tuesday evening.
Lutz defeated a resurgent James Goad in the “Reaper SS” Chevrolet Camaro in their semifinal match to advance to the final. Oklahoma City’s top runners, including Ryan Martin, Chuck Seitsinger, Justin Shearer, and Shawn Ellington, all bowed out of competition early, as the likes of Kayla Morton, Scott Taylor, and Kye Kelley all advanced into the later rounds.
